Description
Bratapfel, or Baked Apples, are a classic holiday dessert featuring warm, spiced apples stuffed with a delicious mixture of nuts and raisins. This comforting treat is perfect for the colder months and is sure to fill your home with a festive aroma.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 medium apples (such as Gala or Honeycrisp)
- 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
- 1/4 cup raisins or sultanas
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tbsp butter, cut into small pieces
- 1/4 cup apple juice or water (for baking)
- Optional: whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for serving
Instructions
-
Prepare the apples:
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Core the apples, removing the seeds and creating a hollow center. Be sure to leave the bottom intact so the filling stays inside. -
Make the filling:
In a small bowl, combine the chopped nuts, raisins, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Mix well. -
Stuff the apples:
Spoon the filling into the hollowed-out centers of the apples, packing it gently but firmly. Place a small piece of butter on top of each stuffed apple. -
Bake the apples:
Place the stuffed apples in a baking dish and pour the apple juice or water into the bottom of the dish. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the apples are tender when pierced with a fork.
Notes
- You can substitute the raisins with dried cranberries or apricots for a twist on the classic recipe.
- If you prefer a sweeter dessert, drizzle honey or maple syrup over the apples before serving.
- These baked apples are perfect with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for extra indulgence.
