Description

California Rolls are a classic sushi roll made with crab, avocado, cucumber, and seasoned sushi rice. This easy-to-make recipe is perfect for beginners and delivers delicious homemade sushi in no time.

Ingredients

  • Sushi Rice: 1 1/2 cups
  • Nori (Seaweed Sheets): 4 sheets
  • Imitation Crab (or Fresh Crab Meat): 1 cup
  • Avocado: 1 ripe
  • Cucumber: 1/2 cucumber, julienned
  • Rice Vinegar: 2 tablespoons
  • Sugar: 1 tablespoon
  • Salt: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Sesame Seeds (optional): 2 teaspoons

Instructions

  1. Cook the Rice: Rinse the sushi rice until the water runs clear. Cook the rice according to the rice cooker instructions, then let it cool slightly.
  2. Season the Rice: Mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small bowl. Fold the mixture into the cooked rice and allow it to cool.
  3. Prepare the Fillings: Julienne the cucumber and slice the avocado. If using imitation crab, shred it into strips.
  4. Assemble the Rolls: Place a sheet of nori on a bamboo mat. Spread a thin layer of rice over the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top free of rice. Add a few strips of crab, avocado, and cucumber in the center.
  5. Roll the Sushi: Carefully roll the sushi tightly using the bamboo mat. Seal the roll with a bit of water on the edge of the nori.
  6. Slice the Rolls: Using a sharp knife, cut the roll into 6-8 pieces.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Serve your California Rolls with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi on the side.

Notes

  • For a spicy version, add a drizzle of spicy mayo or chili sauce on top.
  • If you’re new to sushi-making, don’t worry! It may take a few tries, but it’s worth it.
