This warm and gooey Chocolate Cobbler features a tender cake-like top with a rich, molten chocolate sauce underneath. A comforting Southern classic perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • All-Purpose Flour: 1 cup – forms the base structure of the batter
  • Granulated Sugar: 3/4 cup – adds sweetness and moisture to the cake layer
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder: 2 tablespoons – infuses deep, chocolatey flavor
  • Baking Powder: 2 teaspoons – ensures the cake rises and becomes fluffy
  • Salt: 1/4 teaspoon – enhances and balances the sweetness
  • Milk: 1/2 cup – brings the dry ingredients together into a smooth batter
  • Unsalted Butter (melted): 1/3 cup – adds richness and a velvety texture
  • Vanilla Extract: 1 teaspoon – adds warmth and depth
  • Brown Sugar: 1/2 cup – melts into the sauce for added caramel-like depth
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder (for topping): 1/4 cup – intensifies the fudgy sauce
  • Boiling Water: 1 1/2 cups – activates the sauce magic during baking

Instructions

  1. Preheat Your Equipment: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease your 8×8 baking dish.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Add milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Stir until smooth but don’t overmix.
  3. Prepare Your Cooking Vessel: Pour the batter into the greased baking dish and spread it evenly with a spatula.
  4. Assemble the Dish: In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar and cocoa powder. Sprinkle this dry mixture evenly over the batter—do not stir.
  5. Cook to Perfection: Carefully pour the boiling water over the top. Again, do not stir. Bake for 35–40 minutes until the top is set but the cobbler jiggles slightly from the gooey sauce beneath.
  6. Finishing Touches: Let cool for 5 minutes to thicken the sauce slightly.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Scoop into bowls while still warm and serve with ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

  • Use high-quality cocoa powder for richer flavor.
  • Don’t skip the boiling water—it’s essential for the sauce.
  • Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.
