Ingredients
Scale
2 cups all-purpose flour – for the cake’s structure
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder – deep chocolate flavor
2 teaspoons baking powder – helps the cake rise
1 teaspoon baking soda – balances acidity and lifts the batter
1/2 teaspoon salt – enhances the chocolate
2 cups granulated sugar – adds sweetness and moisture
1/2 cup vegetable oil – keeps the crumb soft
2 large eggs – binds everything together
2 teaspoons vanilla extract – adds depth
1 cup buttermilk – makes the cake tender and rich
1 cup hot coffee – enhances the chocolate flavor
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips – melted for ganache
1 cup heavy cream – for ganache and frosting
1/2 cup butter, softened – for the frosting
2 cups powdered sugar – sweetens and thickens the frosting
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
Sift together flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
In another bowl, whisk sugar, oil, eggs, and vanilla. Stir in buttermilk, then combine with dry ingredients. Stir in hot coffee until smooth.
Divide batter evenly into pans and tap to release air bubbles. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to racks to cool fully.
For ganache, heat chocolate chips and cream until smooth. Cool, then whip until fluffy.
Layer cakes with whipped ganache. Beat butter, powdered sugar, cocoa, and cream to make frosting. Frost the cake evenly.
Chill 30 minutes before slicing and serve at room temperature.
Notes
Use room temperature ingredients for even mixing.
Cool layers completely before frosting.
Chill cake before slicing for neat layers.
Swap ganache with jam or peanut butter for variation.
