Ingredients

Scale

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons meringue powder
  • 56 tablespoons water
  • Green gel food coloring
  • White icing for snow detailing
  • Assorted sprinkles, edible glitter, and sugar pearls for decoration

Instructions

  1. Make the Sugar Cookie Dough:
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using), and mix until combined.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  • Divide the dough into two portions, wrap each in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  1. Cut and Bake the Cookies:
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness.
  • Use Christmas tree cookie cutters of various sizes to cut out shapes. Place the cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  • Let the cookies cool completely on a wire rack.
  1. Make the Royal Icing:
  • In a bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water until the icing is smooth and glossy. Adjust the consistency by adding more water for thinner icing or powdered sugar for thicker icing.
  • Divide the icing into bowls and tint one portion with green gel food coloring. Keep another portion white for snow detailing.
  1. Decorate the Cookies:
  • Use a piping bag with a small round tip to outline and flood the cookies with green icing. Let it dry for 10-15 minutes.
  • Add snow details, ornaments, and garlands using white icing, sprinkles, and sugar pearls.
  • Add edible glitter for a shimmering effect.
  1. Assemble the Platter:

  • Arrange the decorated cookies on a large platter in the shape of a Christmas tree. Start with larger cookies at the base and use smaller cookies for the top.
  • Add candy canes, chocolate truffles, or festive candies around the cookies for extra flair.

Notes

  • Refrigerate the cookies after decorating to set the icing faster.
  • Use star-shaped cookies or a star candy at the top of the tree for a finishing touch.
  • Include a variety of cookie sizes for a layered, dimensional effect.
