Description

Crispy, golden homemade onion rings with a light, bubbly coating and tender sweet onion inside. Perfect as a snack, side, or party appetizer — and way better than takeout.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, sliced into 1 cm rings
  • 150 g all-purpose flour
  • 50 g cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt (plus more for sprinkling)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 250 ml club soda or sparkling water
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan to 175°C (350°F).
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, paprika, and garlic powder.
  3. Slowly pour in the club soda and whisk until a smooth batter forms. Let rest for 5 minutes.
  4. Separate onion slices into individual rings and pat dry.
  5. Dip each ring into the batter, allowing excess to drip off.
  6. Fry in small batches for 2–3 minutes per side until golden and crispy.
  7. Transfer to a wire rack and sprinkle with extra salt while hot.
  8. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

  • Use cold club soda for a crispier coating.
  • Let the batter rest to activate the baking powder.
  • Drain on a rack instead of paper towels for ultimate crunch.
