  • 1 cup carrots, diced
  • 1 cup celery, diced
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup milk or cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for dumplings)
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (for dumplings)
  • 1/2 cup milk (for dumplings)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for dumplings)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Your Equipment: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a skillet, melt butter and sauté onion, carrots, and celery until soft. Stir in flour and cook 1 minute.
  3. Prepare Your Cooking Vessel: Gradually whisk in broth and milk. Simmer until thickened. Season with thyme, salt, and pepper.
  4. Assemble the Dish: Stir in cooked chicken and peas. Transfer to baking dish.
  5. Cook to Perfection: In a bowl, mix dumpling flour, baking powder, salt, milk, and melted butter. Drop spoonfuls over the filling.
  6. Finishing Touches: Bake uncovered for 30–35 minutes until dumplings are golden and puffed.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Let rest 5–10 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley if desired.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the dumpling dough to keep it light and fluffy.
  • Let the bake rest after baking so the sauce thickens properly.
  • Add herbs or shredded cheese to the dumpling dough for extra flavor.
