This Easy Homemade White Bread recipe is perfect for beginners! With simple ingredients and a few easy steps, you can enjoy soft, fluffy, and delicious bread straight from your kitchen.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F)
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (or vegetable oil)
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted (optional for softer bread)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast:
In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and stir to dissolve. Let the mixture sit for about 5-10 minutes, until frothy.
  2. Make the dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir with a spoon until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour, 1 tbsp at a time, until it pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  3. Knead the dough:
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  4. First rise:
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the dough:
Punch down the dough to release any air bubbles. Turn it out onto a floured surface and shape it into a loaf. Place the dough in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  6. Second rise:
Cover the pan with a towel and let the dough rise for about 30 minutes, or until it has risen above the top of the loaf pan.
  7. Bake the bread:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
  8. Cool and serve:
Remove the bread from the oven and brush the top with melted butter (optional). Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • To make this bread softer, you can substitute half of the flour with bread flour.
  • If you prefer a crispier crust, you can place a pan of water at the bottom of the oven while baking to create steam.
  • This bread can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
