Description

These Easy Papparotti (Coffee Buns) are a delightful treat, featuring soft, buttery buns with a rich coffee-flavored crust. The combination of light, fluffy dough and the sweet coffee topping makes these buns the perfect snack or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Buns:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup butter (softened)

For the Filling:

  • 1/4 cup butter (softened)

For the Coffee Crust:

  • 1/4 cup butter (softened)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp instant coffee (or brewed coffee)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Make the Dough:
    • Combine milk, sugar, yeast, flour, egg, salt, and butter in a large bowl.
    • Knead until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes.
    • Let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, approximately 1-1.5 hours.
  2. Shape the Buns:
    • Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
    • Roll each piece into a ball and flatten them into discs.
    • Place a small amount of softened butter in the center of each disc.
    • Gather the edges of the dough to seal the butter inside and shape into a ball again.
  3. Let Rise:
    • Place the shaped buns on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
    • Cover with a damp cloth and let them rise for 30 minutes to 1 hour, or until puffed up.
  4. Make the Coffee Crust:
    • In a small bowl, beat together butter, sugar, egg, instant coffee, flour, and cornstarch until smooth and creamy.
  5. Pipe the Crust:
    • Fill a piping bag with the coffee crust mixture.
    • Pipe a swirl of the coffee mixture onto each risen bun.
  6. Bake:
    • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  7. Serve:
    • Let the buns cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • If you prefer a stronger coffee flavor, you can increase the amount of instant coffee in the crust.
  • Ensure the dough is well-kneaded for a soft and fluffy texture.
  • You can store the buns in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
