Ingredients
Scale
For the Dough:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup plain yogurt (Greek or regular)
1/2 cup warm milk
1/4 cup warm water
2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
For the Garlic Butter:
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
2–3 garlic cloves, minced
2 tablespoons fresh parsley or cilantro, chopped (optional)
Instructions
Make the Dough: In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Add the yogurt, warm milk, and warm water to the dry ingredients. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
Knead the Dough: Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook.
Rest the Dough: Coat the dough with a bit of olive oil, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rest for 1–2 hours until it doubles in size.
Prepare the Garlic Butter: In a small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter and stir in the minced garlic. Add chopped parsley or cilantro if desired.
Shape the Naan: Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then use a rolling pin to shape it into an oval or circle about 1/4 inch thick.
Cook the Naan: Heat a skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat until very hot. Place one naan onto the dry skillet. Cook for about 1–2 minutes, or until bubbles form on the surface. Flip and cook the other side for another minute.
Brush with Garlic Butter: Remove the naan from the skillet and immediately brush it with the garlic butter.
Repeat and Serve: Repeat with the remaining dough portions, stacking the cooked naan on a plate and keeping them covered with a clean kitchen towel to stay warm. Serve warm with your favorite curries, dips, or as a side to any meal.
Notes
If you don’t have a skillet, you can also cook the naan on a grill.
You can make the garlic butter ahead of time and store it in the fridge for later use.
