Description

A creamy and comforting green bean casserole made with fresh green beans, sautéed mushrooms, a rich homemade sauce, and topped with crispy fried onions for the perfect crunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 900 grams fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 250 grams button mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions
  • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Your Equipment: Preheat oven to 190 degrees Celsius and bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
  2. Combine Ingredients: Blanch the green beans for 3 to 4 minutes until bright green and slightly tender. Drain and set aside.
  3. Prepare Your Cooking Vessel: In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add sliced mushrooms and cook until softened and lightly browned. Stir in minced garlic and cook briefly.
  4. Assemble the Dish: Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and stir for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Simmer until thickened. Season with salt and black pepper. Stir in grated cheddar cheese if using. Fold in the green beans.
  5. Cook to Perfection: Transfer the mixture to a baking dish. Bake for 20 minutes until bubbling. Sprinkle crispy fried onions on top and bake for an additional 5 minutes until golden.
  6. Finishing Touches: Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Spoon into serving bowls while warm and creamy.

Notes

  • Do not overcook the green beans during blanching to maintain texture.
  • Cook the mushroom and flour mixture until properly thickened before baking.
  • Add crispy onions during the final minutes of baking to keep them crunchy.
  • The casserole can be assembled ahead without the onion topping and baked when ready to serve.
