Description

Juicy hamburger steaks seared to perfection and smothered in a rich onion and mushroom gravy. This comforting classic brings savory flavors and nostalgic warmth to your dinner table.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat with olive oil.
  2. In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper until just combined. Form into 4 to 6 oval patties.
  3. Place patties in the hot skillet and cook for 4 to 5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, melt butter. Add onions and mushrooms. Sauté until golden and tender, about 8 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook 1 more minute.
  5. Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and stir. Gradually whisk in beef broth. Let simmer 5 to 7 minutes until thickened.
  6. Return patties to skillet, cover, and simmer 10 minutes more to absorb flavors.
  7. Serve hot with gravy spooned over top.

Notes

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for juicy results.
  • Let patties rest a few minutes after cooking for best texture.
  • Add a splash of cream to gravy for a richer flavor.
