- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- ½ tsp salt
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
For Coating:
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
For Dipping (Optional):
- Chocolate sauce
- Caramel sauce
Instructions
-
Prepare the Dough:
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine water, sugar, salt, and butter. Bring to a boil.
- Reduce the heat to low and add the flour all at once, stirring vigorously with a wooden spoon until the mixture forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan.
- Remove from heat and let the dough cool for 5-10 minutes.
- Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until the dough is smooth and glossy.
-
Shape the Churros:
- Transfer the dough into a piping bag fitted with a large star tip.
- On parchment paper, pipe the dough into heart shapes. Freeze the piped hearts for 20-30 minutes to hold their shape during frying.
-
Fry the Churros:
- Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Gently lift the frozen churro hearts from the parchment paper and carefully place them into the hot oil.
- Fry in batches for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
-
Coat the Churros:
- In a shallow dish, mix granulated sugar and cinnamon.
- While the churros are still warm, toss them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until evenly coated.
-
Serve:
- Arrange the churro hearts on a platter and serve with chocolate or caramel dipping sauce on the side for an extra touch of sweetness.
Notes
- If you don’t have a piping bag, you can use a Ziploc bag with the tip cut off to pipe the dough into heart shapes.
- To keep churros crispy, make sure they’re drained well on paper towels after frying.
