This classic Irish Soda Bread is a deliciously simple and rustic bread made with basic ingredients like flour, baking soda, and buttermilk. Perfect for St. Patrick’s Day or any time you crave a hearty, homemade loaf. Enjoy the sweet touch of raisins in every bite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 and 3/4 cups buttermilk

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, sugar, and salt.
  • Make a well in the center and add the egg, raisins, and pour in the buttermilk.
  • Mix with your hands or a wooden spoon until a soft dough forms.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 30 seconds.
  • Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Cut a deep cross on top of the loaf.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Notes

  • If you prefer a less sweet version, you can reduce or omit the sugar.
  • For extra flavor, you can add a bit of caraway seeds, which are often included in traditional Irish Soda Bread recipes.
  • Ensure the buttermilk is fresh for the best results.
