Indulge in the heavenly blend of Eastern European tradition and Italian flair with these Nutella Babka Buns. Soft, sweet, and swirled with rich Nutella, these buns are perfect for any occasion!

For the Dough:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, lukewarm (about 110°F)
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

For the Filling:

  • 1 cup Nutella spread
  • 1/2 cup chopped hazelnuts (optional)

For the Glaze:

  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tbsp milk

Instructions

  • Prepare the Dough:
    In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and yeast. Add the lukewarm milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir until the mixture begins to come together. Gradually add the softened butter, kneading it into the dough. Continue kneading on a floured surface or with a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook for about 10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot until doubled in size, about 1–1.5 hours.
  • Shape the Buns:
    On a floured surface, roll the dough into a rectangle (approximately 16×12 inches). Spread the Nutella evenly over the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edges. Sprinkle chopped hazelnuts over the Nutella, if using. Starting from one long side, tightly roll the dough into a log. Cut the log into 12 even slices using a sharp knife or dental floss.
  • Second Rise:
    Place the slices in a greased baking dish, leaving a little space between each bun for rising. Cover the dish with a towel and let the buns rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Bake:
    Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the buns for 25–30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  • Make the Glaze:
    In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk if needed.
  • Glaze and Serve:
    Drizzle the glaze over the warm buns. Serve immediately and enjoy the gooey Nutella swirls and soft, fluffy dough!

Notes

  • The hazelnuts are optional but add a nice crunch to the soft buns.
  • These buns are best enjoyed fresh, but you can store them in an airtight container for 1–2 days. Reheat them slightly before serving for the best texture.
