A sweet and savory Southern classic, this apple and cheese casserole is the perfect blend of tart apples, creamy cheese, and a buttery cracker topping. An unexpected yet delicious side dish that pairs wonderfully with holiday meals or baked ham!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups peeled and sliced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ tsp cinnamon (optional, for warmth)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice (to prevent browning)
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup crushed Ritz crackers (or butter crackers)
  • 4 tbsp butter, melted
  • ½ cup whole milk or heavy cream

Instructions

  • Preheat & Prep:
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.

  • Prepare the Apples:
In a bowl, toss apple slices with sugar, cinnamon (if using), and lemon juice.

  • Layer the Casserole:
Spread half of the apple mixture in the baking dish. Sprinkle half of the cheddar cheese over the apples. Repeat with the remaining apples and cheese.

  • Add the Topping:
In a small bowl, mix crushed crackers with melted butter. Sprinkle the cracker mixture evenly over the apples and cheese. Pour milk or heavy cream evenly over the casserole.

  • Bake & Serve:
Bake uncovered for 30-35 minutes, or until bubbly and golden brown. Let cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Granny Smith apples give a nice tartness, but you can also use Honeycrisp or any tart apple you prefer.
  • If you want a creamier texture, opt for heavy cream instead of whole milk.
