Ingredients

Scale

For the Donuts:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp red food coloring

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For Garnish:

  • Mini heart sprinkles

Instructions

  • Make the Donuts:
    • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a donut pan with non-stick spray.
    • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
    • In a separate bowl, combine buttermilk, melted butter, egg, vanilla extract, and red food coloring. Mix until smooth.
    • Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
    • Spoon or pipe the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each cavity about 2/3 full.
    • Bake for 10-12 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into a donut comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Prepare the Frosting:
    • In a mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter together until smooth and creamy.
    • Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until thick and spreadable.
  • Frost and Garnish the Donuts:
    • Spread or pipe the cream cheese frosting onto the cooled donuts.
    • Sprinkle mini heart sprinkles over the frosting for a festive touch.

Notes

  • You can adjust the amount of red food coloring to achieve your desired color intensity.
  • For a lighter frosting, reduce the powdered sugar slightly.
