Description

A soft and fluffy sesame-coated pastry inspired by classic Turkish bakery flavors. This plain simit poğaça uses simple ingredients, is safe and easy for teens to make, and bakes into a golden, lightly crisp treat perfect for breakfast or snacking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups (360g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (240ml) warm milk
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 packet (7g) instant yeast
  • 1 egg yolk (for brushing)
  • 1/2 cup sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Add vegetable oil, salt, and flour gradually. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead lightly until smooth, then cover and let rest for 30 minutes.
  4. Divide dough into equal balls. Dip the tops into egg yolk, then into sesame seeds.
  5. Place on a lined baking tray and bake at 350°F (180°C) for 20–22 minutes until golden.
  6. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Keep milk warm, not hot, so the yeast activates properly.
  • Sesame seeds can be lightly toasted before coating for extra flavor.
  • If dough feels sticky, add only a little extra flour at a time.
  • Use parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
