Ingredients

Scale

For the Cookies:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract (optional)

For the Icing:

  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 23 tbsp milk or heavy cream
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Food coloring (pink, red, or white as desired)

For Decorating:

  • Valentine’s themed sprinkles

Instructions

  • Make the Cookies:
    • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
    • Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
    • Add Egg and Flavoring: Mix in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using) until combined.
    • Combine: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
    • Chill the Dough: Divide the dough in half, flatten into discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or up to overnight).
    • Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
    • Cut Out Cookies: Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out the cookies and place them on the prepared baking sheets.
    • Bake: Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are set and just starting to turn golden. Cool completely on a wire rack.
  • Make the Icing:
    • In a bowl, whisk together confectioners’ sugar, milk or heavy cream, and vanilla extract. Adjust the consistency with more milk or sugar as needed. Add food coloring to achieve your desired shade.
  • Decorate the Cookies:
    • Spread a thin layer of icing on one cookie at a time. Immediately garnish with Valentine’s themed sprinkles before the icing sets. Let the cookies dry completely.

Notes

  • Chilling the dough is important for easy rolling and clean cookie cutting.
  • You can customize the icing colors and sprinkles for any occasion, not just Valentine’s Day.
