This classic vanilla buttercream frosting is smooth, creamy, and perfect for cakes, cupcakes, or cookies. With just a few simple ingredients, it’s easy to make and customizable for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 4 to 5 cups powdered sugar, sifted (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp fine salt (adjust to taste)
  • 4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 34 Tbsp heavy cream or whole milk (adjust to desired consistency)

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, beat the butter until light and fluffy.
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • Add the salt, vanilla extract, and 3 tablespoons of heavy cream or milk. Beat on high speed until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.
  • Add more cream or milk if needed to reach your desired consistency.

Notes

  • For a thicker frosting, use less heavy cream or milk.
  • If the frosting is too sweet, you can reduce the amount of powdered sugar.
  • This frosting can be tinted with food coloring or flavored with different extracts.
