Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large sweet onion, peeled
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon paprika for sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder for sauce

Instructions

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to 375°F.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. In another bowl, whisk milk and eggs together.
  4. Carefully cut the onion into petals without slicing through the base and gently spread it open.
  5. Dip the onion into the flour mixture, coating every petal thoroughly.
  6. Dip the coated onion into the egg mixture.
  7. Return the onion to the flour mixture for a second coating.
  8. Carefully lower the onion into the hot oil and fry for 7 to 10 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  9. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  10. Mix mayonnaise, ketchup, paprika, and garlic powder together for the dipping sauce.
  11. Serve immediately while hot and crispy.

Notes

  • Use a large sweet onion for the best flavor and shape.
  • Keep the oil temperature steady for maximum crispiness.
  • Let excess batter drip off before frying.
  • Serve immediately for the crunchiest texture.
