Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough:

  • 4 cups (500g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup (65g) granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) warm milk
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) warm water
  • 1/3 cup (75g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs

For the Topping (Optional):

  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Red or pink food coloring

Instructions

  • Make the Dough:
In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Let it sit for 5-7 minutes until frothy.
In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, warm milk, softened butter, and eggs. Mix until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  • Prepare the Topping:
In a medium bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar until creamy.
Add the flour and vanilla extract, mixing until a dough forms. Divide the topping into two portions and add red or pink food coloring to one or both portions. Mix until the color is evenly distributed.
  • Shape the Dough:
Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 10-12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then shape each ball into a heart by pinching the bottom and slightly indenting the top center with your fingers.
Place the heart-shaped dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Add the Topping:
Roll the topping into thin discs large enough to cover each heart-shaped dough. Gently press the topping over each piece of dough, ensuring it adheres. Use a sharp knife to score designs (such as heart patterns) on the topping.
  • Final Rise and Bake:
Cover the conchas loosely with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for 30-40 minutes until slightly puffy.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the conchas for 18-20 minutes, or until the dough is lightly golden and cooked through.
  • Cool and Serve:
Let the conchas cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature

Notes

  • You can use food coloring to make the topping more vibrant in pink or red, but it’s optional.
  • These conchas are perfect for Valentine’s Day or any special occasion where you want a festive treat.
